How to Choose a Vet
How to Choose a Vet
Need to know that your vet will look after your pet well when they are sick? The best solution is to find a good vet in advance before you need one, to make sure that you feel happy that they will provide the best care for your particular pet.
[edit] Steps
1. Ask others in your area of their experiences, word of mouth recommendations are very valuable as they are not biased and you are more likely to get a true appraisal of the abilities of the vet and the practice in general.
2. Approach local animal shelters and animal clubs who will have experience of many different vets.
* Not all vets can be judged the same this is because some vets practices specialise more in one type of animal than others. This is especially true in rural areas where the bulk of the vets work may be with larger farm animals. It is important therefore to compare several vets and to find out as much as possible about their individual experience and knowledge with the care of cats.How to Choose a Vet
* When visiting and comparing different vet surgeries you should have already prepared a set of questions to ask. These questions should include:
* Opening times, important if you need to have flexible access to your vet, for instance evenings and weekends.
* Fees – find out their standard consultation fees, also their fees for standard treatments such as vaccinations, worm and flea treatments etc.
* Emergencies – what are the arrangements for out of hours emergency care for your cat, for instance do they do home visits?
* Alternative medicine – find out what their attitude is towards alternative and complementary treatments for your cat, such as homoeopathy and acupuncture. Holistic treatments such as these can have many benefits especially in the older cat.
3. Never be afraid to ask a vet what their experience is in the treating your particular breed of pet. This may be especially important if you have pedigree show cats for instance that may require specialist care. In which case making sure that the vet you choose is up to date with all the latest medical advancements in cat care would be a benefit.

[edit] Tips
* Once a suitable vet has been chosen, you will need to discuss with them your cat care and what their recommendations are for the inoculations etc over the coming year. The types of inoculation required will vary depending on the particular risks in your geographical area and also the age and medical history of the animal. As a general rule the program for treatment are:
* Nine weeks – first vaccination
* Twelve weeks – second vaccination
* 16 weeks – spaying for female cats
* 4 – 6 months – neuteringfor male pets.
* 6 months – first flea treatment then monthly thereafter
* Every six months – worm treatment
* Every year - booster vaccinations and check up
* The yearly check up carried out by your vet will include:
* Checking for parasites and mites, your vet will look in the ears for any signs of infection causes by mites etc and will brush the fur around the neck area to check for flea dirt’s.
* Teeth – the vet will check for gum disease and any loose or bad teeth. You may notice them scraping the teeth with their fingernail to remove any plaque build up.
* Weight – many vets will weigh the cat and keep a record of this. Often loss of body weight and condition can be one of the first signs of an underlining illness.

How to Choose a Life Jacket for Your Pet
The truth is not all dogs can swim. And not all those that can swim are great swimmers. Additionally, water or weather conditions can cause problems even for a pet that is typically a strong swimmer. So, while there are no regulations regarding life jackets for pets, a dog life jacket can help keep your pet safe while aboard your boat or around any body of water.
Pet life jackets are designed to keep the animal afloat in a horizontal, swimming position. An additional, important function of a pet life jacket is as a retrieval device, should your pet fall overboard.

How to Choose Healthy Christmas Gifts for Your Pets
Buying Christmas gifts for your pets is a lovely way to include the family pet in holiday activities. For families whose pet is really pampered and included in family occasions, it makes sense to let your pet join in.
[edit] Steps
1. Purchase just an item or two that your pet will appreciate. There is absolutely no need to overspend or overbuy, as pets aren't materialistic and haven't a clue how much monetary value is involved, nor how many things make a good present haul!
2. Choose suitable items. A good toy, treat, or pet bed will be appreciated. Toys are a lot of fun because the pet can start playing with them straight away, adding to the joy of the day.
How to Choose Healthy Christmas Gifts for Your Pets
3. Be sure to choose toys and sleeping gear that will last and is sturdy. Avoid gimmicky items that will clutter up the house or fall apart, creating mess and potential swallowing hazards.
4. Try to include a treat even if you buy a toy. Treats are a big favorite for any pet. Always select pet-appropriate treats, such as pre-packaged treats that are more expensive than what you would normally buy for them. Avoid dangerous treats such as chocolate, a lot of human food and anything containing milk products from China.
How to Choose Healthy Christmas Gifts for Your Pets
[edit] Tips
* Don't think that just because you don't get your animal something lavish that it won't love you; as stated above, pets aren't materialistic.
[edit] Warnings
* A dog bikini is not by any means cute. It is not something a pet will derive pleasure from; that is a present you wanted, not the pet.
* Make sure your pet will not choke on the gift you choose. Choose wisely.

How to Catch a Spider
How to Catch a Spider
Have you ever seen a really cool spider that you wanted to catch but didn't know how? Well, this article is going to tell you all about how to catch a spider with a number of tools.
[edit] Steps
1. Get some books about spiders just to learn the basics about them and which ones to avoid.
2. Get your equipment. My equipment is usually gloves, containers, a friend (optional), and a stick.
3. Find a spider's web. The webs are usually inhabited, but if the web looks dull or wispy, then a spider is probably not living there.
4. Once you have found a web, make sure you have you gloves on and your containers at the ready.
5. Here is a catching method for a spider in its web. Place the biggest part of the container behind the web and the lid in front. Quickly bring the two together without injuring the spider. Clear the web of around the rims and shake the container up so the spider can't climb out on one of its webs.
6. For a trapdoor spider, you want to take your stick (it should be a long one)and prod it behind the spider you are trying to capture. It should move into the canister and you got yourself a trapdoor spider (My favorite besides the wolf spider).
7. To catch a ground-dwelling spider you should gently shoo the spider into the canister with your lid, then bring the jar up so it can't escape.
How to Catch a Spider
8. Our final spider is the jumping spider. Its tricky to catch so you may want to have a partner there to help you. First, use your stick to make it jump into your canister in front of it. Clamp the lid down and you got the jumping spider.
[edit] Tips
* You may not find very many jumping spiders when you first start looking for them.
* Don't panic if the spider crawls onto your hand. Just gently brush it off.
* Catching partners make everything a whole lot easier. Trust me on this one.
* Have fun. That is the most important thing.
[edit] Warnings
* Watch out for the brown recluse and the widow family. The recluse has a marking shaped like a violin on its abdomen. The black widow has an hourglass marking on it abdomen. The brown widow, and the red widow aren't as dangerous but still go to a doctor straight away.
* If you get bit don't panic. Just wash the bite out with antiseptic and put a band-aid with neosporin on it. If you get bit by a recluse or widow call 911.
[edit] Things You'll Need
* Gloves
* A long stick
* A friend (optional)
* Canisters
* Patience
* Lots of areas to search.

How to Catch a Bug to Feed Your Pet
Are you tired of making the weekly trip to the local pet store when all the ingredients to a healthy diet are in your own backyard? Well, keep that extra few bucks you spend on crickets and freeze-dried blood worms for your frog, reptile, or whatever exotic pet you own in your pocket and buy yourself lunch.
[edit] Steps
1. Find a good source of insects. An open field or the neighborhood ditch or even your backyard. Taller grass usually means more insects. When cutting your grass, you'll notice thousands of insects full of protein and other nutrients.
2. Find a container to hold insects in temporarily. An old gallon carton would be perfect, but it will get disgusting, so constantly renew it.
3. Place food in it. Insects won't live long without food. Anything in the vegetable/fruit family will work. If you have a fire-belly toad, feeding carrots to their future meals will help keep the orange color from fading.
4. Start your hunt. Grab a mesh net or something with the same effect to assist you. When you get an insect in your net, immediately open your container. Grab the insect, and put him in his new home, and quickly cap it. Look for crickets (appropriately sized, of course), moths, grasshoppers, small beetles, etc. Don't try to catch too many flying insects; they will fly right out of the container when you open it.
5. Open the lid to its cage. Open the cap of your container, and wait for a few insects to fall in. If any die, take them out and trash them. From that point on, it's basically trial and error. See what your pet will and won't eat.
6. Either toss the container for a new one, or wash it out and start over.

[edit] Tips
* Don't be afraid to touch the insects if necessary. Most of them won't bite or hurt you.
* Put a layer of dirt at the bottom of your container to make the mock habitat more realistic to the insects, but be careful about letting it fall into the tank when your trying to pour insects.
* Spray the inside of the container with water lightly, so they have something to drink. Don't over-spray. Crickets are stupid and will drown if you place even a small amount of sitting water in their habitat.
* Don't forget that insects need to breath too! Grab a thumbtack and place several small holes in the top of the container, so insects are less likely to chew the holes bigger and escape.
* Wear pants and use Off when searching for insects to avoid unwanted visitors.
* Dust the insects with calcium dust to improve your pets health.
* Don't ever catch spiders, adult mantises, ticks, or wasps/bees,/hornets, as these may injure you or your pet.
[edit] Warnings
* Don't try to catch something if you don't know what it is.
* Make sure you didn't recently use pesticides.
* Never feed insects larger than your pet can handle. A small frog cannot ingest the same things a bearded dragon can.
* If you are an adult, you may look stupid trying to hunt bugs in an open field. Best to stick to the privacy of your own backyard.
* Feed your pet wild crickets at your own risk. They can be dangerous to pets. Everything else you find should be okay (assuming you know what it is).

* An Old Gallon Jug
* A Grassy Area
* Vegetables and fruit
* sticks to put in the cage

How to Build a Ladybug House
How to Build a Ladybug House
Love the little red creatures that crawl across your hand in the spring? Now that this time is arriving, make a ladybug house out of simple materials to house these cute little creatures!
[edit] Steps
1. Find a piece of cardboard in the form of a box or sheet. Cut out of it 5, 5x5 inch squares. Tape or glue them together. There should be one side that does not have a cover. This is the entrance.
2. Decorate your little house of wonder. Ladybugs are attracted to light blue, pink and yellow. Paint or cover the box in light blue, and paint or glue on pink and yellow flowers. The inside doesn't have to be painted, unless you really want it to be.
3. Add a water source. Lady bugs are really attracted to water. They spend their entire lifespan searching for it. Out of tin foil, create a pool that is about 5 inches long and very, very shallow, like half the size of a lady bug. If you have a small Styrofoam plate, all the better! Fill it with tap water. Add rocks and leave, but not to many or it will weigh down the house. Also add a damp paper towel, folded up into the interior. Throw in some cheese for good measure.
4. Place your house on a sturdy tree branch, and place the pool right next to it. Spray your whole hotel with sweet, fruity perfume, give it an hour or two, and you've got ladybugs crawling!
[edit] Tips
* Do this only during spring; it will probably not work during any other time.
* If you want your house to last for a long time, make it out of wood instead of cardboard.
[edit] Warnings
* It is almost guaranteed that ladybugs will swarm, but don't tell younger children; they might get too sure of themselves and cry if none come.
[edit] Things You'll Need
* Pink, light blue, and yellow construction paper or paint
* Cardboard
* Paper towel (optional)
* Water
* Cheese (optional)
* Perfume
